Thawing frozen seafood properly is significant not only to ensure the quality of the seafood but also to prevent health risks. For example, all of our seafood has a protective glaze of water to prevent freezer burn-in to ensure quality. Once thawed, gently pat away any excess moisture from the glazing as soon as possible.

We recommend that you follow the USDA’s instructions on safe food handling, which can be found here. We also recommend that all cooking instructions are followed and that you use a food thermometer to ensure that all seafood and other applicable items are cooked to the USDA’s recommended internal temperatures, which can be found here.

Here are a few simple ways how to defrost:

The Refrigerator Method

It might be the longest, but thawing seafood in the refrigerator is undoubtedly the safest way to thaw any protein such as seafood. It also protects the quality of the seafood, providing the best quality-control method. For example, for our Individual Frozen Portions (IFP) or Individually Quick Frozen (IQF) bags like our shrimp and scallops, it can take up to 12- 24 hours to thaw. Please remove from the original package, plate, and cover, or at a minimum, puncture the plastic packaging. Once melted, seafood lasts up to three days in the original packaging. Do not refreeze after thawing.

The Water Method

Here’s how it works:

IFP Portions: Place the seafood in a bowl of cold water (not warm or hot as that starts the cooking process) in the kitchen sink. Change the water now and then or place a constant drip/spray of water to control the temperature. Check the seafood after one hour – it should be fully thawed by then. Cook immediately after thawing.

IQF bags:

Place the desired quantity of seafood (scallops/shrimp) that you will use into another resealable bag.Replace unused IQF seafood immediately back into the freezer.Submerge the sealed bag in a bowl of cold tap water.Let the bag sit in the water until it’s completely thawed, changing the water every 30 minutes, if necessary.

We don’t recommend running under cold water outside of the bag. Cook immediately after thawing.

The Microwave Method

Not always the favorite way, but it’s fast, and the microwave method is undoubtedly the quickest of the three. Still, it’s the least preferred method to preserve the seafood’s quality. But if you forgot to take it out of the freezer and are in a hurry, here’s what you do: make sure you puncture the plastic before placing it in the microwave. Use the “Defrost” function and set the time according to weight. Cook immediately after thawing.

Only from harvesters we trust

Harvested in an area in the North Atlantic called Georges Bank, our wild-caught, sustainable KnowSeafood Signature haddock fillets have been a New England favorite for generations.

Fishing out of our home town of New Bedford, Massachusetts, the local fishermen sail their trawlers to this nutrient-dense body of water and spend a few days towing their nets to land these native fish. Since there are limitations to how much haddock can be harvested, fish are caught to a quota and are not overfished.

Once back to the New Bedford docks, these fresh fish are processed, hand-filleted, packaged, and blast-frozen within hours of being caught.

OUR SEAFOOD HAS A STORY.

The Best Haddock Ever!

I cannot find NE Wild Haddock in local supermarkets. I've been looking for a long time and found it at KnowSeafood. The price is very reasonable; the fillets are beautiful with an excellent fresh taste. I buy it every time I reorder because it's our favorite!

Wild Haddock from Know Seafood is delicious!

Great fish. I grew up in New England in the 50s and 60s and ate a lot of Haddock. When I moved to the West Coast in the late 70s, I missed Haddock broiled, baked and deep fried. I found KS and have been happily reunited with one of my favorite fish delicacies. Got some in the freezer right now!

Fresh and Tasty

We enjoy this haddock, especially breaded with a splash of fresh lemon juice from our tree. We can't find haddock and many other types of seafood here in AZ. So, I am thankful for KnowSeafood and the variety offered. Hoping for other types of filets in the future, as well, like grouper, red snapper, and orange roughy.

Small and smaller

The fish was fresh and wonderful. But ever since my first order the piece sizes have been smaller. Do they give you bigger ones to draw you in and then cut costs? I’m planning on comparing other companies to decide.

KnowSeafood

Hi Anne - Being a wild caught product, the Haddock will vary in size however all will be 6oz portions. All our portion sizes are listed on the product page and are based on weight rather than the shape or size. I hope this helps! :)

My go to for great Haddock

Living in the Midwest it’s nearly impossible to find Haddock, let alone great tasting fish. Last order they even gave me a small credit back to my card because I forgot the coupon code. Will never shop anywhere else for my my seafood needs.

Little taste of home

Originally my husband and I are from New England. My husband was in the military when we first got married and have been moving around since. Most states we have moved to, you cannot find haddock. Looking up online I found knowseafood. I can’t say enough about them. This Haddock has that mild taste and slightly flaky meat we are use to. Takes us right back. Since then we have bought scallops, shrimp and cod. Very impressed with it all.

Ok. Just okay

Not the best haddock I’ve had. Not the worst either. Just not very special. I’m used to the best of the best from knowseafood. This is not great haddock at alk

Wonderful

This haddock was fresh and wonderful tasting. I was disappointed that it came with the skin removed which is the best part of you ask me and makes it much easier to cook but so be it. Still completely worth the purchase.
